Dermatology

The skin mirrors the inner self. It is richly endowed with emotional symbolism. Direct hypnotic suggestion has produced erythema, blisters, wheals, urticaria, tumefaction, congestion, hemorrhage, and various sensory effects ranging from anesthesia to hypersthesia, cold to hot, and itching to pain. With all this available to hypnotic techniques, those afflicted have good reason look into hypnosis for therapy.

Organic skin manifestations do not respond as well to mere suggestion per se but, rather, to hypnotic sensory-imagery conditioning.

There are studies which indicate that harmful reactions in the skin can be blocked by hypnosis. Post hypnotic suggestions of coldness neutralized reactivity to allergens and histamines. Reduction in skin sensitivity after hypnosis alone has been reported.

Hypnosis has relieved itching in refractory cases of intractable eczema, nevus, herpes zoster, lichen planus, psoriasis, hyperhidrosis, and other skin disorders.

There are several favorable reports on its use in chronic ichthyosis. Acne has been cured by hypnosis merely by suggesting that thinking of the word “scar” would symbolize an ugly facial appearance, thus picking and spreading of the lesions were prevented.

An intensified hypnotherapeutic relationship, combined with the hypnotherapist’s ability to release a sufficiently strong affect, often results in dramatic recovery. With dermatologic disorders, it appears that the greater the conviction of cure, the less the physician’s suggestive power is required, probably because of the skins ability to express ones emotions outwardly.

Permissive hypnotic techniques which do not mobilize critical attitudes are employed to facilitate sensory-imagery conditioning.

Revivification, automatic writing, dream interpretation, and other projective hypnotic techniques are often effective in the dissolution of refractory skin disorders. The patient is asked to revivify the disturbing experiences that preceded the onset of the symptom. Discussion of feelings associated with these experiences can help resolve emotional conflicts.
