Hypnoanalysis
There are many ways of relieving
a person of their troubles, and hypnoanalysis is but one of
them. Dave Elman’s methods are common to many in the
field, and uses the relaxed state of hypnosis for reviving
a person’s past experience with his/her troubles.
Those who have read Irene Hickman’s most wonderful book “Mind-Probe
Hypnosis”, will note that she also used a form of hypnoanalysis
to relieve subjects of their troubles, the primary difference being
that she specifically took them to past
lives.
In another book by Roger Woolger, “Other
lives, Other Selves”, he uses again a similar method of hypnoanalysis
directed at past lives to relieve subjects of their trouble's.
Elman seems to compare and contrast hypnoanalysis with the
psychiatric medium of psychoanalysis. I, for one, don’t
believe in psychoanalysis, primarily because I have never encountered
or even read about anyone who has ever been helped, and I really don’t
believe there exists anyone that has been helped by years of reliving
hardships other than the practicing psychiatrist’s own wallet.
By the way, I challenge anyonoe to prove me wrong with this one, because
I really wish i was wrong, but you know I am not.
Elman’s methods overall do seem quite sound
and are definitely worth a try if other, faster measures, don’t
work. His method is listed here below:
1) Have all organic pathology ruled out via medical testing by a physician.
2) Gain and maintain rapport as you introduce the idea of relaxing to
enable an ease of memory.
3) Induce the hypnotic state.
4) Guide the subject to a pleasant childhood memory using any regression
technique.
5) Then, help the subject locate the beginning of her troubles. At this
point the subject will typically have an abreaction,
in turn gaining a new understanding for a forgotten memory, and all
troubles should be relieved, unless, there are more instances to relive.
Personally, I don’t believe that all the pain and hardships are
necessary, and feel that Erickson’s methods of simply
gaining relief by either providing the tools and or learnings necessary
for relief. A simple prescription, such as Milton’s famous directions
for many clients to climb “Squaw Peak” is often all someone
needs to come up with their own discovery and relief; this occurs because
when such a direction is provided by someone considered an authority
in the field of thereapy, the listener allows herself to continue thinking
until she comes up with her own solution, as she wonders what the therapist
wanted her to find.
Another interesting method of hypnoanalysis is termed "Pinpointing".
Pinpointing is the locating of the starting point of a neurosis, or
the initial beginning cause, via the use of hypnotic regression
techniques.
Pinpointing is useful for problems such as:
1) Persistent pain after anesthesia:
If pain is persistent after the administration of anesthesia,
it is definitely in one’s mind. Phantom limb pain would
be an extreme example of such a neurosis, because the area of pain no
longer exists.
2) Migraines: Once pathological possibilities are ruled out,
long term forgotten memories are often blocked out by migraines
or other ailments, and are often relieved when understood.
3) The Reduction of Phobias: By taking someone to the initial
incident of a fear or phobia,
there could be a new “adult”, understanding gained.
4) Reduction or Elimination of Stuttering,
Stammering: These ailments are often cured by a revisiting to the initial
cause in childhood, when the subject wasn't old, or big enough to look
after a fear themselves.
5) Tics: Tics and
stuttering have often been found to have similar backgrounds,
and modern day cures are very similar, but most studies direct the thought
that tics are often pathological in nature.
6) In most cases where only one specific problem or symptom is involved:
An example here could be an allergic
reaction at odd times with no apparent resolution. Pinpointing the first
incident of a sneeze, or hives might bring resolve to a long unknown
ailment.
Pinpointing is not recommended
when there is a conglomeration of symptoms. Often, there are many instances
leading to a symptom, and if there are a number of symptoms, it could
take an awful lot of work. Elman suggests that with many ailments or
symptoms, there could very well be pathological reasons, but he does
also indicate relief of much misery in such a client after extensive
work.
