Organic Brain Disease

The main goal when dealing with organic brain disease is that of bringing the patient to a point of functioning similar to the onset of the disease. The general thought is that new neural pathways can be developed to provide the direction for bodily function as had once been done by the presently damaged area of the brain.

Today there are many areas of study that work with the possibility of this reasoning. Any time we have a new learning, there are new neural pathways created and connected, so why not with old learnings being relearned. In Deepak Chopra’s “Quantum healing”, Chopra writes about new cells maintaining an imprint of memory even to the point of being dissected into what is presently considered nothingness. If this truly is the case, then a memory of any kind once accessed can be used to imprint itself on other cells, which can be further used for physical and mental functioning, which is somewhat of how Milton Erickson initially regained the functioning of his body after his plight with polio. Erickson used the memory of how it felt to use his muscles to recreate that use once again, and steadily he build upon it. Fortunately, he had the most important ingredient within him and that was "desire”, the desire, passion and wanting to get better, along with a belief that anything is possible. Then he slowly but surely built small success upon small success until he achieved his goal. Later in life he applied his own personal learnings to others. Fortunately, he had further understandings about what might drive certain individuals to build upon that main ingredient, "desire”.

It seems that most of Erickson’s patients battling some form of organic brain disease had one thing in common – anger and resentment about their own specific tragedy. Milton used this anger, and built it up to a point of passion, and desire, to function on their own once again. At different time’s he added other routines like what we now call “brain gym exercises”, to get both sides of the brain working together, and other driving forces, such as that of listening to a stuck stutterer, and wanting to spit out the stutterers words oneself.

Primarily the thing is to get the person working at acquiring a new learning, and like all new learnings, it starts slow, and the more that is added on the greater it grows.
