Psychotics
& Hypnosis
When treating psychotics,
a hypnotherapists approach is in generality no different than
with any other type of patient. The only real challenge for the hypnotherapist,
is gaining and maintaining the psychotic’s attention, in turn,
the gaining of rapport is most crucial.
How do we gain this valuable ingredient of rapport, well, as they say
in NLP, we pace, pace, pace, then try to lead, and if the patient
doesn’t follow, we continue to pace her behavior, and beliefs
until the person begins to follow our lead.
The next most important aspect Milton Erickson speaks of, is
working with the person’s emotions, and intellect. He states that
people will defend their intellect emotionally, and so he works from
this area as he states, “when you understand
how man really defends his intellectual ideas and how emotional he gets
about it, you should realize that the first thing in psychotherapy is
not to try to compel him to change his ideation; rather, you go along
with it and change it in a gradual fashion and create situations wherein
he himself willingly changes his thinking.”
So, given the above information we:
- Meet the patient on her own level, recognizing and respecting her
beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors;
- Create small adjustments within the patient that are consistent with
her beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors; and then
- Using the minor new changes from step two above, we elicit behaviors
and understanding in such a way that will cause new understanding initiating
the desired changes.
