Binds
Binds
and double-binds were one of Erickson’s most
favored hypnotic language patterns, and were not only used
with resistant patients,
but were also used in order to allow his subjects to operate in a manner
that best suited the individual.
For greater clarity, listed below are the different
forms of double-binds, as described in various texts but most
notably by Milton Erickson
and Ernest Rossi’s “Hypnotic Realities”
(1976):
Double Binds –
a bind offers a choice between two or more alternatives which
lead in the desired direction – e.g. Would you prefer to sit in
this chair, or lie on that couch as you go into a deep trance?;
Time Double Bind –
these binds link an element of time with an autonomous response
– e.g. Would you prefer to go into a deep trance, quickly
or slowly?
Conscious/Unconscious Double Binds
– If your unconscious wants you to enter
hypnosis, you will keep reading, otherwise you will just continue
going through this site paying attention to what is important to you
unconsciously.
Double-Dissociation Double Bind
– You can read this page without knowing
what it is, then you can go back and discover you know what it is without
knowing you’ve already read it.
Reverse Set Double Bind –
this allows a patient to both resist and also yield to the hypnotherapists
suggestion – e.g. You can keep on smoking like a chimney for the
rest of your short life, or you might sit and think about just what
it might take for you to just stop, and respect your body.
Non-Sequitur Double Bind
– the comical double bind, which
is a good use of humor – e.g. Would you like to make those changes
now, or would you rather wonder why you came here as you go home happy
we’ve succeeded?
Milton Erickson
was fond of using non-sequiturs or illogical statements as double
binds. This play on words appealed to his sense of humor - why
not add some fun to working with people? To hook a child, Milton
Erickson might start with a time double bind such as,
"Would you rather go to bed at 8:30 or exactly
at 8:45?" this would be followed by an irrelevancy such
as "Do you wish to take a bath before going
to bed, or would you rather be careful about not putting on your pajamas
backwards in the bathroom?" This is, of course, a kind of
confusion technique.
Illusion of Choice and All Possibilities
– Now, will you continue to go over all
these pages quickly, or slowly, yet perhaps you might just decide to
continue this later, or tell someone else about this website,
but you can just skip to the end, or decide to go over what you have
already seen, but the only matter of importance is that you enjoyed
doing it your way.
