Eye Movements

For a most thorough elaboration of eye movements, commonly referred to as eye accessing cues in NLP, the reader is referenced Richard Bandler's "Frogs Into Princes". It is a wonderful book, and one of the first to send me on my never ending journey into the field of hypnosis and hypnotherapy.

Below are the basics in accord with eye movements as further developed by Dr. Bandler, and are correct for that of most naturally right handed individuals. For accuracy, a number of questions are best asked in order to learn the persons own system, but once had, it is always the same.

It has been found that when a person’s eyes move upwards, they are using visual imagery. This is also true when the eyes are facing straight ahead and are defocused.
For the right handed individual, the eyes will move to their upper left with recalled images, and to their upper right when constructing images.

If the eyes move to the left or right on a level plain, this indicates internal auditory recognitions.
For a normally right handed individual, remembered sounds or conversations are indicated by the eyes moving towards the persons left, and constructed sounds or dialog, the eyes will move towards their right.

When the eyes move down to the right, a person is said to be accessing their kinesthetic representational system.

Not mentioned in most texts, but learned through my own practitioner training, I have found that the olfactory and gustatory being closely connected, are accessed with the eyes facing down also much of the time. I must mention that different texts also suggest that eyes to the lower left at times indicate internal dialogue (speaking to oneself).

As a final note, it should be realized that memories become fragmented with time. So upon questioning an individual, one will find that especially with long term memory recall, the eyes will dart from left to right in order to reconstruct these fragmented images, so it is not necessarily considered a constructed story as some might think.
