Magic Question

The “magic question”. This question sets off the stage with self-expectation and conviction, a self-proclaimed belief, and having learned that one’s imagination is in control of what follows.

Charles Tebbetts required his students to memorize the following question verbatim due to its elegantly simplified structure encompassing all that one requires to easily become hypnotized.

“Are you ready to be hypnotized? All hypnosis is self hypnosis. If you follow my simple instructions, no power on earth can keep you from being hypnotized. You can resist if you want to, but that is not why you are here. Just follow my simple instructions, and you are about to enjoy a very pleasant, relaxing experience.”

The actual question provides the subject with the opportunity to have any further misconceptions, or personal thoughts cleared before the hypnotic induction. The subject might also be ready to use the facilities, or remove eye wear to provide for a relaxing trip. Whatever possibilities that may render some resistance to the hypnotist should all be cleared with this question.

The rest of the information following the initial question serves as a recap of the information provided during the pre trance interview to eliminate fears of lack of control, and being subject to someone else’s wishes. It strengthens one’s knowing that he has the power within himself, and that the hypnotist is simply helping as a guide. Most importantly it provides the client with the self-acknowledgment that, “he will” follow the hypnotist’s directions in order to have a relaxing trip and that he will be co-operative, providing a pre-hypnotic suggestion to the subconscious, “to do as suggested”.
