Selective Thinking
Selective
thinking is the ability to hold one’s
fixed attention on a single thought, without any added interference.
Selective thinking is the ability to focus one’s attention
on a primary reference, and become completely absorbed within the framework
of the experiencer’s point of focused attention.
In order to enter the state of hypnosis, selective thinking
must be established, because hypnosis is all about focusing
one’s attention.
In order to live our every day lives, we go through periods of selective
thinking quite often throughout the day. At times selective
thinking will be established on an external source, such as a book,
movie, or a nail as we take our hammer and drive it home. Most often,
selective thinking will be directed in words, at past associations,
memories which provide us with understandings to what is being experienced,
often leaving us somewhat lost when we return to our external focus
of attention, often finding that we have missed something of importance.
To achieve the state of hypnosis both the bypassing of the
critical faculty
and the establishment of selective thinking must be met. So
how do we accomplish this with what might seem an impossibility to many.
It’s as simple as playing a game of pretend, in which even a three
year old child can participate.
First “close your eyes”, and relax
all the muscles and nerves in and around your eyes to the point that
they won’t work. This statement alone begins the process
of selective thinking, and if directed to just focus one’s
attention on the relaxation of the muscles and nerves in and around
the eyes long enough, this state of focused attention will lead one
deeper and deeper, toward a greater concentrated attention.
Now in order to reach the state more quickly, “once
the muscles and nerves in and around your eyes are so relaxed that they
just won’t work, try them, to make sure they won’t work”.
Anyone will be able to open their eyes if they truly want to, but firstly
the use of the word "try” provides
the implication of failure, and secondly, simply pretending to not be
able to open them, somehow causes our critical faculty to say
“OK, I don’t know why you don’t
want to pay attention and open your eyes, cause you can you know, but
if that’s the way you’re going to be, I’m just going
to sit right back over here, relax, and ignore whatever you intend on
feeding me for a while, see how you like being ignored.” Fortunately,
we don’t have to take our critical faculty too seriously,
because it doesn’t have much will power, which is why it will
immediately jump up and object to anything that goes against our moral
being.
Finally, with our critical faculty at rest, we can provide
further hypnotic suggestions whether as a guide to someone,
or on our own, as to what we might like to image, or focus our attention
upon, such as that wonderful thought of taking
a deep... breath... lay back... relax, completely now... simply knowing...
that all’s good... as you... rest quietly... breathing... deeply
now... feeling a sense... of gratification... for having done... a good
job, that’s right... calm... peaceful... pleasing thoughts...
of way back when...the warmth... the pleasure, and nothing else... really
matters... that’s right... just allow your head… to...drop
down... that's right....
