Speaking Generally
The Ericksonian hypnotherapist
often speaks generally while sounding quite specific. This
pattern stimulates the listener to derive the specific meaning best
suited to his personal understandings and needs.
Example:
“I am sorry that you forgot that special
night … with that special person… those exciting things
that happened … those very warm feelings that would embarrass
you to talk about … since we are all strangers.”
When using this type of language pattern, the generalities immerse the
client within an internal transderivational
search process, in turn accessing memorable events.
This type of hypnotic language pattern is used to pace a client's
ongoing internal experience, by watching closely the client's non-verbal
cues (eye tearing, breathing patterns, and muscle tensions) the
hypnotherapist can guide the client through issues which he/she
was unwilling to elaborate on, or might not have consciously realized.
A few more generalities which can be incorporated within trance
are:
a) Pacing external stimuli - in case of trance
disturbances:
"… And you become aware of a variety
of different things in trance … and what a nice thing
to know that you can let those awareness's come and go, secure in the
understanding that they all can enable you to become even more immersed
in trance ."
b) Bridging topics - to provide further examples:
"… And those things happen in other
ways …"
