Transderivational Search

One’s model of the world employs primarily three processes; that of nominalizations, transformational deletions and distortions, along with the use of a referential index for applied meaning.

Once a client is sent upon the journey of trance, a skillful hypnotist can employ these processes to guide the client deeper into hypnosis by employing his language in such a manner that allows the natural tendency people have of acceptance, assumption, and the requirement for understanding, via language formations, which result in what is called a transderivational search. This is all done with the use of open language, often posed in the form of a question, and/or presupposition, lacking any specific reference. This method in turn causes the listener to go on a transderivational search for meaning (that is to say they go inside, and search for their own reference), which the hypnotist can often direct, with his own educated assumptions, regarding the natural processes consistent with the personality.

The mechanics of transderivational search begin as such;
- a statement is given, referred to as the “Surface Structure”.
There was a noise.

- the intuition assumed, known as the “Deep Structure”.
Something or someone caused the noise heard.

- with further observation of the initial statement, it becomes evident that no reference to what or whom causing the noise had been provided, we therefore say, there has been no “referential index” provided. The process by which people naturally go through to find a meaning as to the “referential index” is the phenomenon known as the transderivational search.

This process of searching for meaning or a reference of some type comes from the persons own model of the world to form new “Deep Structures”, and the vastness of these “Deep Structures” will be a reflection of the vastness/richness of the persons model of the world.
